What Is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy) is an integrative and holistic approach to healing from trauma. It is one of the most recommended therapies for trauma and PTSD survivors.

It is a structured therapy and can be completed in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies. Most people should start to see some improvements in their symptoms, if not process the traumatic memory completely, in 6 to 12 sessions.

How We Help You

Step 1: We Learn About You

During your first session, we will learn about the experience that brought you in and the feelings associated with your trauma. We will establish the goals for your treatment.

Step 2: Build emotional regulation skills

We will work on relaxation techniques and emotional regulation skills that will help you feel more grounded as we move through the next steps of the EMDR process.

Step 3: Memory identification & Desensitization

We use a series of techniques involving bi-lateral eye movement to help you detach intense and negative emotional reactions from the memory of the trauma you’ve experienced.

Step 4: We Assess Your Progress

At the end of your sessions, we will discuss your experience and feelings. In between sessions, you can keep track of the emotions that arise so we can use that to guide future treatments.

There are big “T” trauma events like loss of a loved one, major accidents, sexual/physical abuse, etc and there are smaller “t” trauma when you experience stress over a long period of time. If you have distressing memories or relive the past as if it is happening again.

You can never be too sensitive. Our feelings are always telling us something is not okay.

Creating a safe environment where you feel supported is the most important thing. We give you tools and teach you how to cope with distressing emotions before starting the trauma work. You set the pace of the session and are in control of how deep you want to go into the trauma.

It depends on many factors such as the intensity and duration of the traumatic event, how recently it occurred, your age at the time of the event, what meaning you gave the event at the time, and what supports you had at the time it occurred. All traumatic events can be worked on overtime and some will take longer than others.

You can get to a place where you can recall the trauma without feeling like you are reliving it or continuing to be distressed by it.
